I see it time and time again in myself and with my clients and students. The destructive pattern of putting our self-love and self-worth up for sale.
You’re going in for a job interview and you have a underlying feeling that if you don’t get the job you’ll end up being labeled worthless.
You’re getting ready for a first date and you feel like if he “just isn’t that into you” you’ll stay in bed for a week eating bon bons, deciding once and for all that you’re just unlovable.
Or you’re trying on you fav, pre-pregnancy jeans for the first time and if the zipper won’t zip you might as well declare yourself an unfit mother. (Pun intended).
We end up allowing our external circumstances to dictate our inner experience of self-worth and self-love.
But what if we never, ever, ever, ever put our self-love and self-worth on the line?
What if we brought our enoughness and happiness into our lives, instead of trying to extract it out of that interview or outfit or relationship?
What if we declared, right here and now, that we will unconditionally love ourselves,
DESPITE our circumstances?
That’s what I’m talking about.
How can you be your own best friend and have your own back no matter what?
Try answering the following questions:
1) Where in my life do I consistently put my self worth and self love on the line? Where am I postponing my own joy?
2) What is it costing me? (Get specific here. Is it keeping you from risking? From inner peace?)
3) How does this serve me? What is the gift of this habit? (Really look deep here. Your first instinct might be to say, “it doesn’t serve me”, but upon closer inspection you might find that it keeps you comfortable or safe, feels familiar, distracts you or allows you to have an excuse as of why you feel so darn bad).
4) What do I really deeply desire in my relationship with myself? (Perhaps you’re ready to consistently set realistic expectations and under promise and over deliver?)
5) Write a love note to yourself, creating a new agreement about how you will treat YOU.
I’d love to hear about your experience. Let me know what you think in the comments section below.

Metamorphosis – One Woman’s Journey to Find Serenity & Empowerment is a deeply vulnerable account of my dear client and colleague, Sue Relihan’s, journey as she attempts to find love and success. Sue shares how she became accustomed to paying a high price for acceptance and how, ultimately, she finds self-love and self-empowerment. I highly recommend this book (and it’s now available for only $3.99!).
